The Canary Islands are the southern outpost of Europe. Situated in the Atlantic Ocean west of Morocco, it's the only
place in Europe that can offer a sun and beach holiday all year round. The Mediterranean is too cold in the winter, so the politically
unstable Israelian and Egyptian areas around the Red Sea are the only alternatives among the nearby tourist destinations.
Flights from most places in North-Europe take from 3 to 5 1/2 hours.

The four most common holiday destinations on the Canary Islands are Grand Canary, Tenerife,
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Grand Canaria is the most visited, probably because the island has the most diverse holiday
alternatives. Here you can find modern citylife and stunning nature with mountains and forests, as well as the sunniest
beaches.
Tenerife is diverse island as well. The two conjoined beaches of Las Americas and Los Christianos in the south are
relatively noisy tourist machines. The beaches as very good. Puerto de la Cruz in the north is a nicer town where
locals, "climate refugees" and tourists live side by side. The area is green due to quite a lot of rain.
In the winter this is a great place for longer holidays, but a bit more insecure if you want a week with a
lot of sun. Teide, Spains highest mountain, is on Tenerife and is well suited for hikes. There ar no snakes,
dangerous animals or insects with danger of infections on the Canary Islands.
Lanzarote is a more relaxed island. Here, the building development is harmonised with the existing architecture. Puerto
del Carmen is the biggest tourist destination with hotels, apartments and restaurants along long sand beaches.
Playa Blanca is a smaller and more quiet village. Timanfaya is an exiting area with volcanic activity in the centre of
the island. Lanzarote is the most expensive island for a vacation.
Fuerteventura has mile long sand beaches both in the north by Corralejo, and in the south by Jandia. With only 35 000
citizens, this is a tranquil island, and tourism is relatively new. Strong winds may be a problem.
Grand Canary, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are underestmated as tourist destinations in the summertime. In Spain,
and around the Mediterranean in general, the heat is often stifling in the summer. On the Canary Islands you are
garanteed sun and summer, but get away from the unpleasant heat due to the cool Atlantic breeze.
